The Lowry are delighted to welcome the first revival of Matthew Bourne’s hugely popular production of Edward Scissorhands, following its first visit in 2006. Returning to Salford from Tue 18 – Sat 22 November, the production won critical and public acclaim when it first opened, winning ‘Best New Dance Production’ at The Manchester Evening News Awards and a nomination for a South Bank Show Award.
Edward Scissorhands is the touching and witty gothic fairytale of a boy created by an eccentric inventor who dies leaving him alone and unfinished. Left with only scissors for hands, Edward must find his place in a strange new suburban world where the well-meaning community struggle to see past his strange appearance to the innocence and gentleness within. Matthew Malthouse and Dominic North will take on the demanding title role of Edward.
Matthew Bourne’s Edward Scissorhands remains faithful to the Tim Burton film, though the performers still have the freedom to bring their own interpretations and subtleties to the characters. Matthew Bourne said, “We are working with a film that everyone loves, so we must show that we know what we are doing, that we are not simply trampling over such haloed ground. Luckily, Tim Burton and Johnny Depp have both seen the production and both loved it, so I think we are ok!”
Original music for the production was composed by Terry Davies. He has also adapted musical themes from the motion picture composed by Danny Elfman, one of Hollywood’s most unique and best-loved composers. Recognised worldwide for his music for The Simpson’s, he has also recently written the theme music to the TV cult hit Desperate Housewives. Terry Davies’ previous successes with Bourne have included the multi award-wining shows Play Without Words and The Car Man.
