Press nights at The Lowry this November
This month there’s fast-paced tragedy and hot-blooded poetry in The Royal Shakespeare Company’s production of Romeo and Juliet. Opera North return with Tosca, I Capuleti e i Montecchi and Of Thee I Sing. Matthew Bourne presents Edward Scissorhands, based on the classic Tim Burton film and the story of an unlikely film star is told in The Cripple of Inishmaan.
Sat 1 November - Limelight and Lunacy - 9pm, Quays
This parlour game pastiche pokes fun at Victorian decorum, exploring the duality between what is ‘proper’ and what is naughty.
Sun 2 November - Pathway to the Red Sun, 8pm, Quays
Inspired by Madama Butterfly and drawing influences from Japanese legend and gothic Western films, this futuristic love story incorporates circus spectacle, poetry, live music and dance.
Tue 4 November - The Cripple of Inishmaan, 8pm, Quays
This comic masterpiece from Irish writer Martin McDonagh sees the making of a Hollywood film disrupt the eccentric communities of two small islands.
Tue 4 November - Opera North, Tosca, 7.15pm, Lyric
At times soaring and tender, at others heart-rending, this tale of love, blackmail and revenge is one of the world’s most popular operas.
Sung in Italian with English titles.
Wed 5 November - Opera North, I Capuleti e i Montecchi, 7.15pm, Lyric
Young lovers Romeo and Giulietta struggle for the freedom to love – but, powerless against the fates, only tragedy awaits them.
Sung in Italian with English titles.
Thu 6 November - Opera North, Of Thee I Sing, 7.15pm, Lyric
Pulitzer Prize-winning musical satire about a presidential candidate’s disastrous simultaneous campaign to win an election – and find a wife.
Sung in English.
Tue 11 November - Royal Shakespeare Company, Romeo and Juliet, 7.30pm, Lyric
This bold staging of Shakespeare’s fast-paced tragedy combines an ensemble of 30 actors and musicians with some of the most hot-blooded poetry ever written.
Tue 18 November - Matthew Bourne’s Edward Scissorhands, 7.30pm Lyric
This sharp and poignant production, based on the classic Tim Burton film, returns to The Lowry to delight the whole family.
