The Lowry’s new season
January – April 2009
The Lowry’s Spring Season is a treat for all the senses, from the culinary delights of Basil Fawlty to the art of puppetry and pop-ups; from the sound of Elaine Paige to the thrilling chill of the Russian Ice Stars.
The Lowry plays host to an exciting season of heavy-weight drama and West End hits from world renowned companies such as Kneehigh Theatre, bringing two exceptional productions, Noël Coward’s Brief Encounter direct from a successful run at London’s Haymarket cinema and Don John. Be Near Me, adapted for the stage by Ian McDiarmid from The Booker Prize nominated novel, is a co-production from the Donmar Warehouse (The Cut) and National Theatre of Scotland (Black Watch).
His Dark Materials (Parts I & II), two full-length plays adapted by Nicholas Wright from the trilogy of novels by Philip Pullman, see Lyra and Will embark on a great quest filled with many fantastical creatures. English Touring Theatre return with Where There’s A Will, directed by distinguished British director, Sir Peter Hall.
On a lighter note, audiences should expect to unbuckle their seatbelts and get ready to roll in the aisles with Boeing-Boeing, the first-class Tony Award-winning comedy. For another taste of comedy enter the manic world of Basil and co. in the Edinburgh Festival sell-out Faulty Towers the Dining Experience, an interactive performance revolving around a 3-course meal in The Lowry Restaurant. Stand-up comedy from familiar TV faces includes Mark Watson, Andy Parsons and Justin Moorhouse.
The critically acclaimed Russian Ice Stars present Cirque de Glace, a new genre of ice show that is guaranteed to entertain and thrill all ages. Treasured all over the world and affectionately known as The Trocks, Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlos blend their loving knowledge of dance with a brilliant comic approach. Solo puppeteer Ronnie Burkett, guaranteed to wow audiences with his elaborate and evocative puppetry, introduces his latest incredible marionette creation for adults, Billy Twinkle, a middle-aged cruise ship puppeteer. Following the sell-out successes of his previous visits, Derren Brown returns with his pioneering blend of psychology and illusion, making for a stunning and dramatic evening.
The celebrated Blonde Bombshells of 1943, the most glamorous of all-girl swing bands, is a musical comedy packed with 1940s classics performed live by a sensational 8-piece band. Commemorating the 50th anniversary of Buddy Holly’s death is a new production of Buddy with two hours of timeless hits. In a special 40th Anniversary celebration Elaine Paige, the ‘First Lady of Musical Theatre’, revisits her award-winning roles from Evita, Cats, Chess and many more.
There’s another well-stocked season in the Studio with more innovative theatre from new and emerging companies. Guaranteed to challenge and entertain, productions include Sherlock Holmes…The Death and Life and the multi-award-winning parody of the Peanuts comic strip, Dog Sees God – Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead.
Join SpongeBob, Patrick and their zany Bikini Bottom pals in an exciting new musical, SpongeBob SquarePants in The Sponge Who Could Fly! Plus, hot on the heels of the phenomenally successful first live show in 2008 comes the brand new LazyTown Live! - The Pirate Adventure, when Sportacus, Stephanie and friends sail into town. Fans of the award-winning Disney Channel Original Movie, High School Musical, will get the chance to see it brought to life on stage at The Lowry next May.
Let The Lowry Galleries take you on a trip around the world with the magical 3D Pop-Up exhibition bringing famous landmarks, buildings and cities to life. Then along the Cumbrian coastline as leading photographer Jem Southam re-traces Lowry’s footsteps, resulting in Clouds Descending, a remarkable series of images focusing on the remnants of Cumbria’s long and significant industrial past.
