The Lowry is pleased to welcome England, by Tim Crouch, the FIRST theatrical production to be performed in the galleries. Staged within the Pop-up exhibition on Thu 27 & Fri 28 November, the audience will experience a new way of looking at the art while enjoying an arresting story unfold around them.
Performed by two guides within an exhibition, England travels the trade routes of art and human beings. It’s a tour through space and across borders from an art gallery to a jam factory, from Salford to Osaka, from a hospital bed to a hotel room. The two actors are Tim Crouch and Hannah Ringham, a founder member of London’s Shunt Collective. England is written and designed to be performed within exhibitions of art inside galleries, so the audience will stand for part of the performance. The evocative sound-score is by award winning composer Dan Jones.
Continuing Tim Crouch’s fascination with the nature of the theatrical experience, the communication of an idea from performer to audience and back again, England is about an empire of transmigrations and transplantations. It’s the story of one thing placed inside another, a heart inside another person’s body, a culture inside another country’s culture, theatre inside a gallery, a character inside an actor, a play inside its audience.
Pop-up is designed and themed on ’Around the world in 80 days’. A fun and original exhibition exploring the magic of pop-up with art work by some of the world’s leading illustrators including Robert Sabuda and paper engineers who have taken inspiration from cities around the world.
