Katie Schofield, who plays Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, will face her fear of dogs next week when she meets her four legged side-kick Toto. Katie will receive vital coaching to overcome her fear and learn how to handle the all-star pooch.
Tibetan Terrier Wispa, who plays Toto, is not new to the world of entertainment having appeared on The Big Breakfast, Blue Peter, CBBC, Sky, Disney and Rolf's Amazing World of Animals. Wispa has starred alongside Johnny Vaughan, Denise Van Outen, Jilly Cooper, Lisa Goddard, Johnny Vegas, Rolf Harris, Billy Connolly, The Cheeky Girls, Eric Sykes and Christopher Timothy. Her stunts and tricks include rolling over, crawling, walking on back legs, dancing, putting paw across face plus picking up and carrying.
Sixteen-year-old Katie from Bury, won her star role alongside Lorna Luft Judy Garland’s daughter, live on North West Tonight. Katie was selected from 160 hopefuls after three days of gruelling auditions.
Katie has already stepped into Dorothy’s ruby slippers, as she starred in Tottington High School’s production of The Wizard of Oz last year. She also recently trod the boards at The Dancehouse Theatre, Manchester, in The Company’s production of The Rose and The Ring.
The Wizard of Oz is at The Lowry from Sat 29 November until Sun 4 January. Based on, and faithful to, the classic Judy Garland film, all the famous songs and characters are here. Dorothy, the Tin Man, Scarecrow and Cowardly Lion, singing such evergreen hits as We’re Off To See The Wizard, Follow The Yellow Brick Road and, of course, the unforgettable, Over The Rainbow.
With magnificent special effects, including a dramatic tornado and a flying witch, Dorothy and Toto are transported from their everyday, monochrome world on the farm in Kansas, to Munchkin City in the colourful land of Oz. The show features lavish costumes, energetic dance routines and stunning laser effects.
