A busy Christmas at The Lowry

The Lowry is filled with family friendly festive fun …

Step into Christmas at The Lowry this year in the most family friendly and festive way. In the theatres, enter the magically musical land of Oz, René’s familiar French café in ‘Allo ‘Allo (until Sat 10 January) or the heartwarming children’s fantasy of The Night Before Christmas (until Sun 4 January). In the galleries, take a fascinating Pop-up (until Sun 15 March) trip around the globe or re-trace Lowry's footsteps along the Cumbrian coastline with Jem Southam (until Sun 22 March). Another of the two unique photography exhibitions showing over Christmas is A Long Exposure: 100 Years of Guardian Photography (until Sun 1 Mar 09) celebrating some of the most memorable picture stories from the newspaper’s photographers since 1908.

The magical family musical, The Wizard of Oz, is back by popular demand (until Sun 4 January) and The Lowry are delighted to welcome Lorna Luft, international star and Judy Garland’s daughter, as the Wicked Witch. Remaining faithful to the classic film, families can enjoy sing-along favourites such as We’re Off To See The Wizard and Over The Rainbow in this stunning production.

The Quays Theatre is home to a new production of ‘Allo ‘Allo!, specially written for the stage by original writers Jeremy Lloyd and David Croft. The show is brimming with all of the joyous mayhem, hilarious innuendos, colourful characters and cherished catchphrases expected from the hit British TV sitcom, including “You stupid woman!”, “Good moaning!” and “Listen very carefully. I shall say this only once”.

The Night Before Christmas is a perfect Christmas treat for all the family. Join Emily as she waits excitedly for Christmas morning, while in the corner a little mouse called Eddie wonders why only humans get presents and decides to set off in search of Father Christmas to find out for himself.

Celebrating 100 years of The Guardian’s distinctive pictorial style, A Long Exposure is a unique photography exhibition showing memorable images from the last century. Curated by one of the Guardian’s most distinguished photographers, Denis Thorpe, the exhibition will feature around 100 images including those of German prisoners from the Handforth Prisoner of War Camp, an aerial view of a First World War battlefield, Winston Churchill in Manchester Town Hall and a powerful portrait of playwright Arthur Miller.

The Lowry’s Pop-up exhibition explores the magic of pop-up with a fun and original exhibition displaying art work by some of the world’s leading illustrators including Robert Sabuda and paper engineers who have taken inspiration from cities around the world. Designed and themed on ’Around the world in 80 days’, this vibrant exhibition shows 3D versions of iconic landmarks from across the globe.

Commissioned by The Lowry, leading landscape photographer Jem Southam has been re-tracing Lowry's footsteps along the Cumbrian coastline, resulting in a remarkable series of images, Clouds Descending. Focusing on the remnants of the area’s long and significant industrial past he has been observing and recording the industrial landscapes and harbour towns of the area, in particular Maryport, Whitehaven, Workington, Sellafield and Barrow.
