Artists exhibit their Pop-ups on The Lowry website

Inspired artists exhibit their Pop-ups online!...

Pop-Up Around the World

Exhibition at The Lowry until Sun 15 March 2009

Enthusiasts of The Lowry’s Pop-Up exhibition are creating their own online gallery to rival the popular 3D display. Visitors to the vibrant exhibition have followed the instructions and templates on the Pop-Up page of The Lowry’s website, www.thelowry.com/WhatsOn using a variety of designs to create their own pop-ups. The aspiring artists have submitted photographs of their creations to popup@thelowry.com for an online exhibition, www.thelowry.com/popup.

Artists from as young as 4 years old have contributed to this imaginative online gallery. Taking inspiration from the ’Around the world in 80 days’ theme of the exhibition, photographs include pop-ups of The Eiffel Tower and the Pyramids in Egypt. Creative youngsters have also come up with their own original interpretations including ‘The Cactus House’ by Leven, age 5 and ‘Lowry Street’ by Ryan.

Pop-up has provided inspiration for workshop participants and gallery visitors alike. One enthused attendee said “The Pop-up exhibition is a great ‘hands-on’ idea for all ages. An inspiration for passing away winter nights!” The Lowry’s Visual Arts Education Manager, Fay Buchanan concurred, “Adult visitors have commented on how the exhibition has all the magical elements that they remember of opening a pop-up book when they were children. Participants of the Pop-up workshops, young and old, have also really enjoyed the thrill of bringing their art to life!”

Several different Pop-up activity days have accompanied the exhibition with more to come in the new year. A free Family Sunday on Sun 25 January will take a magical journey around the globe, inspiring participants to create their own pop-up wonders of the world. Also, over February half term, youngsters can learn how to make fantastic pop-up greeting cards in the Art Zone workshops.

A pop-up is a flat, folded piece of paper which magically turns into a three-dimensional picture when opened. The Lowry’s Pop-up exhibition explores the magic of pop-up with a fun and original exhibition displaying art work by some of the world’s leading illustrators and paper engineers who have taken inspiration from cities around the world. Designed specifically with families in mind, an interactive area within this enchanting exhibition is dedicated to creative activity to provide visitors with a unique opportunity to learn how to make a drawing quite literally leap off the page!

A selection of Pop-Up books are now available to purchase from The Lowry’s online Gift Shop including Robert Sabuda’s pop-up version of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the original publication and The Lowry’s own production of The Wizard of Oz.
