Express Yourself
Jive into The Lowry’s first family dance exhibition
10 April – 27 September 2009
“There are shortcuts to happiness, and dancing is one of them”
(Vicki Baum, American novelist 1888 – 1960)
From rock ‘n’ roll to Riverdance, The Lowry offers visitors the chance to launch themselves feet first onto the dance floor into its first family dance exhibition. Express Yourself takes youngsters and their families on an enjoyable journey through the world of dance from ballet and breakdancing to line dancing and The Lasso.
Designed by Matt Pagett, author of ‘The Best Dance Moves in the World…Ever!’ this hands-on exhibition encourages everyone to have a go themselves. In fact, this exciting exhibition is more feet-first than hands-on as it offers plenty of opportunities to get into the groove. It starts by prompting visitors to use dance to get to know their own bodies followed by examples of dance feats not to try at home!
Express Yourself illustrates the hard work, skill, creativity and dedication of some of the greatest dancers and choreographers of the last 100 years. From tea dancing in the 1940s to Northern Soul in the 60s, this exhibition is all about dance - its history, pioneers, on stage and in the streets. Accessible, informative, friendly and most importantly fun, this exhibition provides a menu of moves, telling you everything you should know before you hit the dance floor!
Visitors will enjoy a tour of dance moves from The Macarena and the Time Warp to Walk like an Egyptian and Agadoo! They can follow pictograms for finger bopping and the Say–What?! (aka the double take) only involving movement of the head for those too scared to get on the dance floor. As confidence grows, there’s the opportunity to progress up to learning moves for the funky chicken and air guitar!
This family exhibition aims to encourage every visitor to express themselves through dance and learn what the human body is physically capable of. The Lowry’s focus on dance in the galleries is reflected in the theatres which regularly presents award-winning dance. In the forthcoming Spring season this includes Birmingham Royal Ballet (Tue 31 March - Fri 4 April), Richard Alston Dance Company (Tue 10 March), Ballet Lorent (Fri 13 & Sat 14 March) and Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo (Fri 6 & Sat 7 March).
