February press nights at The Lowry

Press Night Events in February 2009


There’s a busy start to February at The Lowry with award-winning West End hit, Boeing-Boeing, the highly acclaimed The Holly and the Ivy, as well as a private screening of the LS Lowry Debate. Following a World War theme for families is the incredible Private Peaceful and two shows from Horrible Histories. Opera North return with a triple bill of treats, including the world première of Skin Deep; The Russian Ice Stars bring world-class skating to the Lyric stage and unique touring company, Bare Bones present their brand new show.

Mon 2 February - LS Lowry Debate Screening - 7pm (for 7.30pm start), The Lowry Galleries

Novelist and broadcaster Howard Jacobson joins Brian Sewell, art critic for the Evening Standard, on Sun 1 February in London’s Southbank Centre to discuss LS Lowry’s work and legacy in what is anticipated to be a lively and provocative debate.

On the evening after the event in London we are holding a private screening of the debate for invited guests in The Lowry Galleries. Drinks will be served from 7pm and the screening will commence at 7.30pm.

Fri 6 February - An Evening With Jem Southam - 6.30pm, The Lowry Galleries

Jem Southam is one of the country's leading landscape photographers and this is a unique lecture in the surroundings of his exhibition Clouds Descending at The Lowry. The lecture will give a brief introduction to his work and the extraordinary lengths to which he will go to achieve such stunning photographs.

This is a public event and tickets for press are limited (£5 to the public)

This whirlwind Tony Award-winning comedy of mayhem and matchmaking has had audiences and critics rolling in the aisles.

Mon 2 February – Private Peaceful – 8pm, Quays

By Michael Morpurgo. Adapted & Directed by Simon Reade.

Adapted from the remarkable book by third Children’s Laureate Michael Morpurgo, this play follows a young First World War soldier as he endures a long, lonely virgil.


Tue 10 February – The Birmingham Stage Company, Horrible Histories: The Woeful Second World War - 7pm, Lyric

Prepare for battle as you join us for the next installment of Horrible Histories: The Frightful First World War and The Woeful Second World War.


Tue 10 February – Bare Bones 6 - 8pm, Quays

Six superb dancers from this unique touring company perform the work of three internationally renowned choreographers, presented in the round.


Mon 16 February - Middle Ground Theatre Company, The Holly and the Ivy - 8pm, Quays

Set in a Norfolk vicarage on Christmas Eve, this atmospheric Winter warmer follows an elderly vicar’s family who are forced to confront their secret anxieties.


Wed 18 February - The Russian Ice Stars, Cirque de Glace - 7.30pm, Lyric

This unique combination of world-class skating and unforgettable spectacle is guaranteed to stimulate, dazzle, entertain and thrill audiences of all ages.

Wed 25 February - Opera North, Tosca - 7.15pm, Lyric

Giacomo Puccini

In Puccini’s heart-rending opera, a corrupt police chief blackmails a young woman with the promise of her lover’s freedom, resulting in her plotting a terrible revenge.

Thu 26 February - Opera North, Skin Deep - 7.15pm, Lyric

David Sawer and Armando Iannucci

A world première from composer David Sawer and writer and broadcaster Armando Iannucci, this darkly brilliant satirical operetta is set in a cosmetic surgery clinic.


Fri 27 February - Opera North, Let ‘em Eat Cake - 7.15pm, Lyric

George Gershwin

In the brilliantly composed sequel to Of Thee I Sing, President Wintergreen’s re-election campaign is in full swing. This time, however, people aren’t falling for his smooth slogans…
