Step by step guide to becoming a Trock

The Dance Consortium present Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo

How to: Dance like a girl…

The Lowry, Fri 6 & Sat 7 March 2009
Press Night: Fri 6 March 2009

Start with 16 professionally trained male dancers. Stir in vast quantities of stage make-up. Sprinkle with sparkling tiaras and add glittering tutus. Bring to the boil and season with infinite pairs of gigantic tights. This recipe creates one of the world’s major dance phenomenons, Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, or The Trocks as they’re affectionately known.

The attraction of The Trocks, coupled with the notion of how crazy the dressing room must be while 16 men get into full make-up and costume, is the surprising fact that men can dance en pointe without falling flat on their faces. Dancing every female part from the dying swan to Giselle, their heavy bodies balance delicately on toes as sylphs, water sprites, swans and romantic princesses. Combining their knowledge of dance with a wicked sense of fun, each Trock adopts their own character name like Helen Highwaters, Nadia Doumiafeyva and Ida Nevasayneva.

Coinciding with International Women’s Day on Sun 8 March, the legendary Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo bring glitz, glamour and comedy to The Lowry for the weekend from Fri 6 March. The dancers, whose individual careers include working with other world-class companies such as The Australian Ballet, Dance Theater of Harlem and Rambert Dance Company, perform the full range of the ballet and modern dance repertoire in faithful renditions of the dance styles.

Audiences can gain the full Trocks experience by watching how a performance comes together at an open rehearsal. Dance professionals can also be taken through their paces by The Trocks Ballet Master Paul Ghiselin at the Masterclass, to gain an understanding of the style and choreography of this world-class company.
