The Lowry, Fri 6 & Sat 7 March 2009
Press Night: Fri 6 March 2009
The legendary Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo bring glitz, glamour and comedy to The Lowry from Fri 6 March. Establishing themselves as a major dance phenomenon throughout the world, having appeared in over 30 countries and over 500 cities worldwide, The Trocks return with their inimitable brand of high art and high camp.
Founded in 1974 by a group of ballet enthusiasts for the purpose of presenting a playful view of traditional ballet in parody form, the company’s 16 professional male dancers display startling technique when bringing to life some of the greatest moments of classical ballet. The dancers, including Helen Highwaters, Nadia Doumiafeyva and Ida Nevasayneva, perform en pointe in glittering tutus, combining a loving knowledge of dance with a wicked sense of fun.
Under the artistic direction of Tory Dobrin, the company have garnered huge popularity with fan clubs as far afield as Japan. The 2004/2005 tour marked the company’s 30th anniversary, which included performances at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. They have been the subject of many television shows across the world including a South Bank Show documentary and in 2006 won the Critics Circle Award for most outstanding repertoire.
“Every one of the male dancers believes in the romance and glamour of the great Russian ballet, and jokes aside they dance these ballets for real.” The Times
“The Trocks push ballet to joyful extremes, but they never neglect its discipline.” The Independent
