Press Night Events in March 2009

March at The Lowry sees a wide variety of dance companies from the high camp fun of Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo to the unique and powerful Designer Body. High quality drama too from Kneehigh Theatre with Don John and Brief Encounter, plus English Touring Theatre bring classic farce Where There’s A Will, directed by theatre legend Sir Peter Hall.

Tue 3 March – Kneehigh Theatre in association with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Bristol Old Vic, Don John – 8pm, Quays

Kneehigh bring their renowned brand of physical storytelling to this seductive tale about an irresistible anti-hero in England’s 1978 Winter of Discontent.

Fri 6 March - The Dance Consortium, Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo – 7.30pm, Lyric

This company of professional male dancers blend their enthusiastic knowledge with a brilliantly comic approach to create a playful parody of classical ballet.

Tue 10 March – Richard Alston Dance Company - 7.30pm, Lyric

Features Alston’s latest work Blow Over with lyrics by songwriters Suzanne Vega and Paul Simon, a revival of the iconic Movements from Petrushka and a new work by Martin Lawrence.

Wed 11 March – The Blank Album - 8pm, Quays

Dubbed the “Catherine Tate of Contemporary Dance”, this rock ‘n’ roll album is performed by dancers with their musical instruments, taking the notion of the air guitar to the next level.

Fri 13 March – Ballet Lorent, Designer Body - 8pm, Quays

Seven dancers revolve on turntables, their couture clothing slipping away through powerful choreography, until each evolves into a stunning nude sculptural form.

Mon 16 March – Calendar Girls - 7.30pm, Lyric

With a star-studded cast including Lynda Bellingham, Patricia Hodge, Elaine C Smith, Gaynor Faye and Brigit Forsyth.
Adapted from the film of the same name, this hilarious tale follows the fortunes of a Yorkshire Women’s Institute who pose naked for a calendar.

Tue 17 March - English Touring Theatre, Where There’s A Will - 8pm, Quays

Mon 23 March - Opera della Luna, HMS Pinafore - 8pm, Quays

In true Opera della Luna style, eight multi-talented singer/actors become crew, chorus and principals in a brilliantly fast and hilarious production of this famous comic opera.

Tue 24 March - Noël Coward’s Brief Encounter - 7.30pm, Lyric

Kneehigh Theatre recreates the world of Milford Junction with film, music and words, in this unique theatrical event.

Tue 31 March - Birmingham Royal Ballet, Pomp and Circumstance - 7.30pm, Lyric

Three very different ballets: abstract dance Serenade, Edwardian period piece Enigma Variations, and perennially popular showstopper ‘Still Life’ at the Penguin Café.
