Imitating the dog, one of the UK’s most original and innovative performance theatre companies, make their debut at The Lowry from Mon 1 June with Kellerman, an ambitious and visually exciting new performance piece.
Diagnosed as delusional, Harry is in a hospital where he’s struggling to come to terms with a tragedy that nobody believes has taken place. His notebooks are filled with calculations that attempt to show the past can be manipulated and the future predicted. Kellerman is a gothic tale of obsessive desire, demonic doctors and monstrous nurses, exploring how meddling with the past can have tragic consequences. Combining film, animation and live action, it is a moving and accessible new performance by the creators of the critically acclaimed Hotel Methuselah.
Devised by the company, Kellerman was directed by Andrew Quick, theorist of contemporary performance and lecturer of Theatre Studies at Lancaster University. Actor Anna Wilson, from Whalley Range, has been working with Imitating the Dog for 3 years. She also works as an associate lecturer in contemporary performance at Salford University and is undertaking a fully funded practice based PHD between Lancaster University and The Lantern House (Cumbria).
Kellerman boasts a magnificent two-storey set, designed by Laura Hopkins (National Theatre of Scotland’s Olivier nominated production of Blackwatch), incorporating a revolving stage, flying harnesses and moving masks. Stunning projections by Simon Wainwright allow the narrative to be played across filmed scenes and live action.
Kellerman is supported by Arts Council England and has been commissioned by ICIA, Bath, Nuffield Theatre, Lancaster and Cochrane Theatre, London. It has also been supported by Leeds Metropolitan University Gallery and Studio Theatre, Lantern House and Lancaster Institute for Contemporary Arts.
“Kellerman, the new touring production by Imitating the Dog and Pete Brooks, is one of the jewels in the West Yorkshire Playhouse's ninth season of new work in the north.” The Observer
