The world record for the biggest bowl of porridge was smashed today at The Lowry in Salford, when 171.9kg of the healthy breakfast cooked from Mornflake Superfast Oats was served to hundreds of people in the theatre.
Chef Colin Rostron broke the existing world record, which was set at 81.2kg in Edinburgh in 2007, by stirring 27kg of oats and 150 litres of water with a specially commissioned paddle over heat for just over an hour.
The event celebrates the stage adaptation of the much-loved British comedy classic Porridge which begins its four-week stretch at The Lowry for a month from Tue 22 December. It also aims to raise awareness of porridge oats as the ultimate healthy breakfast option due to its low GI and slow energy release and cholesterol managing properties.
John Lea, Managing Director of Mornflake Oats, said: ‘We’re all so proud to have broken this world record. Not only are we delighted to be supporting one of the region’s leading arts venues in the North, close to the home of family business Mornflake since 1675. Although we’re seeing more and more porridge enjoyed all year round I suppose you could say we’re entering official porridge season in September and we thought this would be a great fun way to remind people of that.’
Making the Perfect Porridge
Bring 2.5 parts of water or milk or a mix of both to the boil, add 1 part oats. Bring to the bowl stirring continuously and then immediately remove from heat and leave to stand according to taste.
The Mornflake oats range all made from the finest quality British oats include Mornflake Superfast Oats, which are milled to retain natural taste and texture for the creamiest hot porridge and chopped for a quicker start to the day, Mornflake Organic Oats, and Mornflake Organic Oats to Go (in convenient sachets).
Written especially for the stage by the original creators, Dick Clement and Ian Le Frenais, one of Britain’s best-loved comedies, Porridge, will begin its 4 week stretch in the Quays theatre at The Lowry from Tue 22 December. Following two previous Christmas seasons at The Lowry with stage adaptations of Dad’s Army and ‘Allo ‘Allo, Calibre Productions return with this unarguable all-time classic. Originally aired on BBC1 between 1974 and 1977, the show promises to rekindle the fond memories of HMP Slade and its notorious inmates, allowing audiences once again to hear the cherished catchphrase “Naff off!”.
