The Lowry auditions for the next generation of Billy Elliots

The Lowry is holding final auditions on Saturday 28th November 2009, for youngsters in the North West, aged 12 – 16 to secure a place on a professional dance scheme.

The Centre for Advanced Training (CAT) scheme provides access to high quality training and nurturing in dance to young people who have a passion for dance and performing arts. The CAT at The Lowry is open to anyone and welcomes applications from students who may have little or no dance experience alongside more experienced dances.

Jonathan Poole, CAT Manager, at The Lowry explains, “This is a unique opportunity for highly motivated and passionate young people who aspire to pursue a career in the dance profession. We look forward to welcoming 30 students in January 2010, to take part in the first CAT scheme at The Lowry and helping them develop valuable new skills which they can demonstrate at a showcase here in July.”

Students who take part in the scheme are required to undertake 6 to 8 hours a week of training activities, outside their normal school or college hours. This will include classes in contemporary technique, ballet, urban and street dance as well as pilates and yoga. Other training will involve diet and nutrition, health and safety, injury awareness and prevention as well as a history and appreciation of dance.

The primary aim of the CAT scheme is to provide an important foundation from which students can access professional training institutions, advancing their potential towards a sustainable and successful career in dance.

The scheme is funded by the Department for Children, Schools and Families through the recognised Music and Dance Scheme and offers intensive training opportunities with professional dance teachers, choreographers and practitioners. It forms part of the new regional dance partnership at The Lowry, Northwest Dance.
