Residents and workers of Salford Quays wanted to unlock the history of the area
Workers’ Research Session - Wed 11 November 2009, 12pm – 2pm
Residents’ Research Session - Sun 15 November 2009, 2pm – 4pm
The Lowry is looking for people who work or live on Salford Quays to aid the development of a new heritage project, Unlocking Salford Quays. In an attempt to discover more about the history of The Quays, The Lowry is holding two informal research sessions, one for the area’s workers (Wed 11 November, 12pm – 2pm) and one for its residents (Sun 15 November, 2pm - 4pm); the results of which will contribute towards a major new heritage and art project.
Information discovered during the research sessions will be used to contribute towards a new Trail around The Quays, designed to unlock the history of the area and engage visitors and residents for generations to come. Work on the Trail will begin in April 2010, forming a major part of The Lowry’s 10th anniversary celebrations.
Unlocking Salford Quays is a creative community-based exploration of the history of this important site, which will re-discover the disappearing heritage of the area in an accessible, creative and enjoyable way. Working with a broad spectrum of the local community, who will drive the project, The Lowry will explore the people, history and traditional industries of the area extracting and representing the stories and traditions it holds.
This project has been made possible by the Heritage Lottery Fund, who awarded The Lowry a first-round pass* grant of £40,400 for Unlocking Salford Quays; a project which aims to engender a sense of pride within the local community, as well as providing visitors with an opportunity to learn about the rich history of the area.
The Lowry Centre Trust is a not-for-profit charitable organisation and registered charity (no. 1053962). All income supports our world-class Theatres and Galleries programme, the care and display of the LS Lowry Collection and our life-changing Community and Education work.
