A theatrical feast of divine decadence at The Lowry’s Nu-Burlesque Season

From ghoulish tales of magic, a freakshow and more cabaret than you can shake your feather boa at, there's something to satisfy every nefarious desire at The Lowry’s Nu-Burlesque Season.

Highlights of the season include the twisted, eye popping underworld of the Gawkagogo Freakshow Thu 3 December), The Family (Sat 5 December) which is an eccentric feast of entertainment, the simply stunning Snow White Masquerade Ball (Sat 12 December) and the legendary Marisa Carnesky’s Magic War (Thu 17 December).

Towards the end of last year, the world of Nu-Burlesque came to The Lowry for a weekend, with the object of proving that Burlesque, despite its association with cheap titillation and strip shows is actually a theatrical feast of divine decadence. So successful was that weekend that we just had to bring it back...and it's bigger and better than before!

Burlesque is derived from the Latin 'burla', or mockery, its roots can be traced to 16th century improvisational theatre. It later acquired a more bawdy image, but its latest incarnation, Nu-Burlesque, takes a full circle poking fun at other classes, parody, lampoon, commedia dell'arte clowning and slapstick.

With this in mind, The Lowry found seven emerging and exceptional companies who bring their own unique and darling styles to The Lowry to prove it's naughty, but very nice....

Our Nu-Burlesque contemporary artists and troupes embrace surreal satire, 'dirty opera', clever text, wordplay and unique visual styles, while simultaneously snaring the audience in a teasing manner.
