An army of technicians will work round the clock to ensure that The Lowry has a fabulous White Christmas this year. White Christmas, starring Aled Jones, Suzanne Shaw and Adam Cooper is heading to The Lowry from Fri 27 November – Sat 9 January. Based on Irving Berlin’s classic 1954 movie, this magical production, with an ensemble of more than thirty and a dynamic 17-piece orchestra, will entail a lot of behind-the-scenes work before it opens in Salford.
The show will finish in Plymouth at 10pm on Sat 21 Nov and a crew of technicians will work overnight to dismantle the set.
The first articulated lorry should leave Plymouth by 2am.
It’s a 287 mile journey from Plymouth to Salford.
13 articulated lorries will be making the six-hour journey
The first lorry will be unloaded at 9am at The Lowry.
50 men will work round the clock from Sunday to Friday – 25 on call at any one time. That’s roughly 3,000 man-hours before the first performance.
The crew will suspend 6,987 kgs from the grid above the stage. That’s almost 7 tonnes.
Each performance depends upon 76 people – onstage and backstage.
There is a 17-piece live orchestra for every show. Every musician has to play every show – there are no deputies.
The show tours with 25 wigs.
The “snow” in the show is made from a mixture of glycol and ethers
This multi-million pound production is brimming with the classic film hits like Blue Skies, How Deep is the Ocean, Happy Holiday, Sisters and of course the unforgettable title song White Christmas. It tells the story of two buddies putting on a show in a magical Vermont inn, and finding their perfect mates in the process.
