The Lowry seeks pictures of the sea and celebrities
To accompany current exhibitions by painter and sculptor Maggi Hambling and photographer Simon Annand, The Lowry is hosting two photography competitions using photo-sharing website Flickr. The competitions, which close on Mon 30 November, 2009, are designed to discover people’s photographic responses to the works of the two distinguished artists.
The Sea: LS Lowry & Maggi Hambling, is a collection of Hambling’s mesmerizing and powerful pieces, shown alongside the understated but equally compelling seascapes of L.S. Lowry. Competition entrants should go to www.flickr.com/groups/thesea to find out how to upload their photographic responses to Maggi Hambling’s work. Competition winners will receive a hardback copy of the beautiful book that accompanies this exhibition, signed by Maggi Hambling.
The Half: Photographs of Actors by Simon Annand features extraordinary portraits, taken over 20 years by Simon Annand, of some of our most celebrated actors, allowing us a rare glimpse into their more private moments, all taken within the 30 minutes leading to curtain up. Competition entrants should go to www.flickr.com/groups/thehalf to find out how to upload their photographs of stars of . The person responsible for the best image, as judged by Simon Annand, will win a hardback copy of the book which accompanies this exhibition, signed by Annand himself.
The Rules:
- Photographs should relate to the theme of Simon Annand’s exhibition The Half or Maggi Hambling’s exhibition The Sea.
- No one may enter more than 5 photos in either category.
- Each entry should include a caption of where the photograph was taken and when.
- Advanced Digital Manipulation, ie Photoshop, is not allowed.
Submitting A Photograph:
1. To enter the competition you must join Flickr, basic membership is free. www.flickr.com
2. Join the group www.flickr.com/groups/thehalf or www.flickr.com/groups/thesea by signing in to Flickr, visiting the groups page and selecting join this group on the right of the page.
3. Upload and tag your photograph.
4. Add a description including when and where it was taken and, in the case of images relating to Simon Annand’s exhibition, the name of the actor/s photographed.
5. Add your pictures to the group www.flickr.com/groups/thehalf or www.flickr.com/groups/thesea or go to your photographs own page on Flickr and select 'send to group'.
6. This group is moderated so it may take a couple of days for your photograph to appear in the group.
