Wed 27 – Sun 31 January - Chinese State Circus

Mon 8 – Wed 10 March - Traces

Mon 15 & Tue 16 March - The Hot Dots

The days of rotund ring-masters and dilapidated big tops are gone as over the past couple of years, circus has risen to the top of the cultural agenda thanks to a combination of inventive staging and boundary-pushing choreography.

To celebrate the ascent of contemporary circus, The Lowry has programmed a series of exhilarating performances, plus an exhibition of striking circus-inspired photography by critically acclaimed fine-art duo Anderson & Low.

Anderson & Low’s exhibition Circus, showing from 16 January to 11 April, features a series of unforgettable images of a circus troupe working on Blackpool Pleasure Beach – shown in stunning detail both in performance and alone amongst the amusement park rides.

The first theatre event of 2010 comes from the ever-popular Chinese State Circus who bring their brand new show to The Lowry from 27 January. This exhilarating production features world-class martial arts warriors and acrobats alongside contortionists, bicycle balancers and a stunning performance of the Lion Dance.

Traces by Les 7 Doigts de la Main (The 7 Fingers) comes to The Lowry following a rapturously received display at The Royal Variety Performance. This award-winning show, at The Lowry from 8 March, combines traditional circus skills with the urban acrobatics found in basketball, skateboarding, street dance, hip hop and rock ‘n’ roll.

Finally for this season, The Hot Dots by So & So Circus sees a contented juggler discover the perils of ambition in this unforgettable theatrical experience set against the backdrop of the 1930s Music Hall. This beautiful show is at The Lowry on March 15 and 16.
