THE WOMAN IN BLACK

A spine-chilling start to the New Year at The Lowry

The Lowry, Mon 18 – Sat 23 January 2010

Press night: Mon 18 January, 7.30pm

The Lowry kicks off it’s 10th anniversary year in style as the unanimously acclaimed West End production of THE WOMAN IN BLACK stops off in Salford from Mon 18 January to Sat 23 January as part of its10th major UK tour.

THE WOMAN IN BLACK was first performed at the Theatre-By-The-Sea in Scarborough back in 1987. The original production received rave reviews. It opened in the West End in 1989 where it has been a major audience puller ever since and has also seen numerous major national tours. Its success has subsequently reached a global level, having spread to the United States, South America and Tokyo.

Stephen Mallatratt’s adaptation of Susan Hill’s best-selling novel tells the story of a lawyer who is obsessed with a curse that he believes has been cast over him and his family by the spectre of a ‘Woman in Black’. He engages a sceptical young actor to help him tell his story and exorcise the fear that grips his soul. It begins innocently enough, but as they reach further into his darkest memories, they find themselves caught up in a world of eerie marshes and moaning winds. The borders between make believe and reality begin to blur and the flesh begins to creep.

Now in its 21st year in the West End, over 7 million people have lived to tell the tale of one of the most terrifying and successful theatre events ever staged.

Robert Demeger returns to perform the role of ‘Arthur Kipps’, a role he has played both in the West End and previously on tour. Demeger’s numerous stage credits include seasons with the RSC, the National Theatre and in the West End. He is joined by Peter Bramhill who will perform the role of the ‘Young Actor’. Bramhill was nominated for the prestigious Ian Charleson Award for his performance in Thomas Moore for the RSC. His recent stage credits include: Rupert Goold’s King Lear at London’s Young Vic and Liverpool Playhouse and Much Ado About Nothing at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre.

The production is directed by Robin Herford, with designs by Michael Holt and lighting by Kevin Sleep. Produced by PW Productions Ltd.
