SCATTERED, the brand new production from MOTIONHOUSE directed by the visionary Kevin Finnan, sees the company on new and impressive form.
Making its north west premiere at The Lowry in February and moving away from the scaffolding of Volatile and Perfect, SCATTERED is performed on an infinity stage where movement and film integrate seamlessly.
Using projection created by award-winning Spanish filmmakers, Logela, Finnan has created a world of water where athletic movement blends visually and literally with film. The performers are at one moment on the stage then sprinting up the upstage curved wall immersing themselves in images of cascading waterfalls, rainstorms and swimming pools.
They hang, suspended over a frozen landscape of arctic beauty at the very top of the curve before diving onto the stage through the ice floes and frozen waters; they hurl themselves into tidal waves, they stride up projected escalators, they sit, impossibly, on projected deckchairs and sneak into giant fridges only to be dwarfed by the shelves inside.
Our reliance on water is explored through movement using scenes of arid deserts and arctic landscapes; human and animal behaviour is examined while oceans of the precious stuff remain remote and unattainable.
Original music by composer Sophy Smith and atmospheric lighting by Natasha Chivers aid the ebb and flow of this exceptional piece; set designer Simon Dormon is the mastermind behind the giant curved stage.
Scattered is performed by Claire Benson, Junior Cunningham, Fernando Pasquini, Laura Peña Nuñez, Olivia Quayle, Alasdair Stewart, and Phillip Stummer.

“…buoyed along on a rapid current of associations…the effect is propulsively kinetic and visual and, wisely, never preachy…” (The Times)
“…integrating dance and film is hardly new, but such impressive results most definitely are…rather than merely providing a backdrop the film creators use multiple projection technology to create a world in which the dancers move, on and through the images…with Scattered Kevin Finnan and his talented dancers have taken the company to a new level.” (Dancing Times)
