Last chance to see The Sea at The Lowry
The Sea
Paintings by LS Lowry and Maggi Hambling
The Lowry, Salford Quays
Until Sun 31January 2010
Beat the January blues with a trip to The Lowry in Salford and enjoy Maggi Hambling’s extremely powerful paintings of the North Sea alongside Lowry's own deeply compelling seascapes. This major exhibition by one of Britain's most distinguished contemporary artists alongside LS Lowry finishes at the end of the month.
Visitors to the galleries have made various comments ranging from “awesome” and “very moving” to “the power and beauty of the sea comes across in all the works”. One visitor said it was “well worth the journey from Southampton” and another commented that it was “the best I have ever seen”.
Maggi was awarded an OBE for services to the Arts in the Queen’s 2010 New Year Honours list. Speaking of her honour: “I really do feel that this honour is, in reality, a celebration of art and the importance of art in all our lives.”
Maggi Hambling says she tries to paint the sound and speed of the waves and certainly people say they can almost smell the sea in her paintings. Land-locked Manchester and Salford residents seeking a flavour of the sea need travel no further than Salford Quays for a fix of crashing waves and calming seascapes.
You are the Sea by Maggi Hambling, a beautifully produced book of words and images accompanies the exhibition.
