Acclaimed company Opera Della Luna returns to The Lowry from Monday 15 February with its latest must-see production, Die Fledermaus. Following previous visits with HMS Pinafore and The Mikado, Opera Della Luna has given Johann Strauss's much-loved operetta a glittering new look and a unique contemporary twist.
One of the country’s best comic opera companies, Opera Della Luna has earned itself a matchless reputation for their productions of Gilbert & Sullivan and Offenbach. Their new production of Die Fledermaus combines Strauss’s classic score with contemporary staging, making it a must for opera novices and connoisseurs alike.
Left by his friend Gabriel von Eisenstein to wander home drunk and dressed as a bat, Dr Faulk decides to exact revenge for his humiliation. He arranges for Eisenstein to attend an extremely risqué party at the home of the outrageous Russian aristocrat, Prince Orlofsky. There Eisenstein seduces a mysterious Hungarian countess, who is in fact his own wife in disguise.
Jeff Clarke’s stylish and unstuffy direction and Gabriella Csanyi-Will’s inspired design make this production of Die Fledermaus an amusing and entertaining experience while losing none of the wit and weight of the original. Strauss’s familiar music is brought to life by an energetic and a talented company of singers.
‘Brilliant. An inspired cast. The most enjoyable evening for ages.’ Opera Now
‘Mischievous, witty, this vivacious production is truly delightful.’ Financial Times
