Press night events March 2010

Sisters, swans and street circus arrive at The Lowry in March, as a host of exciting high-profile drama, dance, comedy and circus shows stop off in Salford. Quality drama comes from two of the country’s most respected theatre companies, Lyric Hammersmith and Donmar Warehouse who bring Three Sisters and Serenading Louie respectively. Classic comedy comes from Stop Messing About – The Kenneth Williams Extravaganza, contemporary circus troupe Les 7 Doigts de la Main presents street circus show Traces and, amongst the many excellent dance shows taking place, high-profile highlights include Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake and Birmingham Royal Ballet’s Sleeping Beauty.

Mon 1 March – Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake – 7.30pm, Lyric

Now firmly crowned a modern classic, Bourne’s iconic production is best known for replacing the traditional female corps de ballet with a menacing male ensemble.

Tue 2 March - Three Sisters – 8pm, Quays

Fusing imaginative staging with evocative physicality, this new production from Lyric Hammersmith and Filter captures the essence of Chekhov’s classic about one family’s search for happiness.

Mon 8 March – Balletboyz - The Talent – 8pm, Quays

A first-rate company of young male dancers present a dynamic programme of new commissions, with the Balletboyz’ trademark films taking you behind the scenes.

Mon 8 March – Traces - 8pm, Lyric

This award-winning show from Les 7 Doigts de la Main combines traditional circus skills with the urban acrobatics found in basketball, skateboarding, street dance, hip hop and rock ‘n’ roll.

Wed 17 March - Stop Messing About –

The Kenneth Williams Extravaganza – 8pm, Quays

Set during a live recording and packed with outrageously funny sketches, parodies and songs, this Kenneth Williams extravaganza arrives at The Lowry direct form the West End.

Tue 23 March - Scottish Dance Theatre – NQR – 8pm, Quays

NQR (Not Quite Right – an acronym used in medical records to describe unexplained difference) is a three-way collaboration examining ‘normality’ and eccentricity.

Thu 25 March - Los Vivancos – 7 Hermanos – 7.30pm, Lyric

Join the seven Vivancos brothers for an evening of irresistible energy as they fuse authentic flamenco with classical ballet and exuberant street-dance.

Tue 30 March - Birmingham Royal Ballet’s The Sleeping Beauty, 7.30pm, Lyric

A thrilling production of Tchaikovsky’s classic romantic ballet about a cursed princess by Birmingham Royal Ballet’s former director Sir Peter Wright.

Tue 30 March -  Serenading Louie – 8pm, Quays

The Donmar Warehouse returns with Lanford Wilson’s timeless portrait of two disillusioned suburban American couples struggling to deal with adulthood.
