The Studio – the place to see innovative theatre in the North West
shows, star names and world-renowned visiting companies, The Lowry’s Studio Theatre has fast become the place to go in the North West for new writing and innovative theatre from local and emerging companies.
The Studio’s summer season, which runs between May and August, is testament to this, with an eclectic programme of productions designed to showcase the very best in contemporary, cutting-edge theatre from some of the country’s hottest companies.
The Orchard, Kolectiv Theatre UK’s striking adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard opens the season (Wed 5 – Sat 8 May). This award-winning production, part promenade piece, was created in collaboration with Iran’s critically acclaimed Bazi Theatre Company.
Though the season opens on an international note, many of The Studio’s productions have their roots firmly in the North West. Deadsquare Productions’ mesmerising one-man show Tales From The Blackjack (Thu 10 – Sat 12 June) is written by Preston-born Richard Holdsworth and performed by Leyland-born one-to-watch Alex Moran.
Other hotly-tipped North West names appearing at The Studio this summer include Mancunian Ellie Rose, writer of When I Grow Up To Be A Man (Sun 20 & Mon 21 June) and Cathy Crabb, Manchester-born author of Moving Pictures And Other Work (Fri 2 – Sun 4 July), who is currently enjoying massive success at the Library Theatre with Beautiful House.
Alongside contemporary drama, comedy and multimedia performances, The Studio season also features two site-specific productions; Marisa Carnesky & Company’s Dystopian Wonders, performed on The Deck in The Lowry Galleries (Thu 13 – Sat 15 May) and Roger Bernat’s Domini Públic [Public Domain, played out in The Studio and on The Plaza outside The Lowry (Sun 18 July).
‘’The Studio is an integral part of The Lowry’s artistic programme, giving audiences access to a wide range of exciting theatre and new writing. Equally important is The Lowry’s role as a supporter of emerging talent, providing a creative environment where developing companies can showcase their work.’’
Porl Cooper, Theatres Programmer/Producer
