To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Britain’s longest-running and most-watched soap opera, The Lowry is delighted to welcome the world premiére of Corrie!, a new comedy by Jonathan Harvey which sees the highlights of five decades of the much-loved Salford-set soap, performed live in under two hours.
Acclaimed playwright and long term Coronation Street script writer, Jonathan Harvey will take theatre-goers on an hilarious journey condensing more than 7000 episodes and more than 2,000 storylines into a two-hour show featuring 115 deaths, 37 births, 86 marriages, one lorry crash, two births, one condemnation, one fire and only two changes of wallpaper!
In the Lowry’s 10th and Coronation Street’s 50th anniversary years, it’s fitting that two Salford institutions should come together for this exciting theatrical event.
Catch Weatherfield’s finest, see all your much-loved characters: Ena Sharples, Hilda Ogden, Percy Sugden, Alf Roberts, Ken and Deirdre Barlow, Curly Watts, Richard Hillman, Karen McDonald, Jack Duckworth, Bet Lynch and many many more.
Relive your favourite memories from the programme - see the viaduct collapse, the coach crash and the tram run over Alan. See Frank capture Valerie, Tracy kill Charlie, Todd kiss Nick, and Gail marry Brian, Martin, Richard and Joe! All this reduced to two hours of mind-boggling stage craft!
Executive Producer of Coronation Street, Kieran Roberts, is to executive produce the stage production on behalf of ITV STUDIOS. Roberts says: “The very heart of British television has been beating with the pulse of Coronation Street for fifty years. That’s a lot of memories, a lot of drama, a lot of poignancy and a lot of laughter.
“I’m thrilled at the prospect of bringing to life on stage all the great stories and characters of fifty years of Coronation Street and I’m sure the play will be a real treat for Corrie fans as well as a great night out in the theatre”.
Corrie premiers this August at the Lowry Theatre, Salford, before embarking on a nationwide tour.
Phi McIntyre says: “‘I saw the first ever episode of Corrie when I was eight and it’s been a part of my life since then, so what an honour it is to bring the whole 50 years back to life ‘live’ on stage in it’s hometown of Salford”.
