Autumn/Winter Studio Season

A brand new batch of entertaining, original and

innovative work in The Lowry’s intimate Studio space

The Studio at The Lowry builds on its reputation for excellent and original work this Autumn with a mix of new theatre and development projects, as well as a continued commitment to other mixed-media artforms and dance.

As part of its commitment to supporting up-and-coming talent The Lowry is proud to present the world premiere of The Play That Killed Me, the first production in an exclusive new series of showcases entitled NeverBeenSeen. The NeverBeenSeen series sees The Lowry work directly with up-and-coming theatre companies to develop exciting new work. There will be more NeverBeenSeen productions at The Lowry in 2011.

The Play That Killed Me (Thu 23 September and Sat 2 & Sun 3 October) is an affecting tale of hope, sacrifice and the bonds of love and friendship that see people through the most agonizing of situations. Inspired by the writer’s grandfather, the play tells the story of two actors, Hector and Charles, who are busy putting on plays for the troops in Africa during World War II. With morale at a dangerous low, they decide to put one on at the front to help inspire the troops despite promises to their wives they would not do anything foolhardy.

September also sees The Studio play host to two productions with strong Salford connections. Fiddy West Productions’ Territory (Thu 16 – Sat 18 September) is a Little Hulton-set story of youth, friendship and a life-changing night. The Key To The Garden (Fri 24 September) is a funny, moving and uplifting one woman play that tells the story of the remarkable Frances Hodgson Burnett. Burnett rose from humble poverty in Salford to earn a fortune, become a close friend of the President of the USA and a pioneering author of classic books such as The Secret Garden, A Little Princess and Little Lord Fauntleroy.

Other season highlights include the première of Lecture Notes On A Death Scene (Thu 9 & Fri 10 September), an immersive experience for one audience member at a time, Boh (Fri 5 November), a witty and touching dance piece that explores the multiple roles modern women play in their day to day lives and Sweeney Todd - His Life, Times and Execution (Thu 18 – Sat 20 November), a deliciously macabre dark comedy about the world’s most famous barber.

‘’The Studio is an integral part of The Lowry’s artistic programme, giving audiences access to a wide range of exciting theatre and new writing. Equally important is The Lowry’s role as a supporter of emerging talent, providing a creative environment where developing companies can showcase their work.’’
