From the tenements of Dublin to the trenches of World War One; Druid returns to the UK with an epic staging of Sean O’Casey’s hugely ambitious and rarely seen tragic comedy, The Silver Tassie, an astonishing story of courage, betrayal and vision.
Set at the height of the Great War, The Silver Tassie follows two young footballing heroes from the back streets of Dublin to the battlefields of France and their return home. Described as an antiwar requiem, The Silver Tassie is an expressionist masterpiece on the brutalities and consequences of War.
Featuring a cast of 19 of some of Ireland’s leading stage and screen actors, including four actor musicians; this new production by Garry Hynes uses music, song, dance and theatre to bring to life this epic tale.
Garry Hynes said - “Yes, it’s our biggest company ever, it’s a gamble, and we have almost had to sell the family china to finance it but we felt that we wanted to demonstrate our belief in the power of live theatre and we wanted to give audiences something different. Seán O’Casey is a great angry provocative writer and these difficult times demand that a voice like his is heard.”
Aaron Monaghan who plays Harry Heegan returns to the UK after winning Best actor in a visiting production at last years Manchester Evening News awards for his role in Druid’s The Cripple of Inishmaan which also won Best Visiting Production.
The cast also includes Liam Carney, Derbhle Crotty, Christopher Doyle, Aoife Duffin, Clare Dunne, Brian Gleeson, Elliot Harper, Ruth Hegarty, Gerard Kelly, Eamon Morrissey, Bush Moukarzel, John Olohan and Adam Welsh.
