EVENTS AT THE LOWRY - January 2011

New start for the New Year from The Lowry’s press office

Introduction to the new system of press information

Welcome to the new press monthly e-bulletin from The Lowry’s media relations team.

We thought that the New Year fast approaching provided a great opportunity for a fresh approach to how we communicate all that’s going on at The Lowry.

We’re aware that we send out an awful lot of press releases about many of our shows although not for everything that goes on in our amazing building.  Now, these monthly round ups will include all the music and comedy events as well as details of our adult and youth activities happening in the month ahead.

As most of you know there are now only two of us in the press office, myself and Marie-Claire, so we would rather spend more time talking to you all about the possible stories you want to write about rather than sending out several press releases every week.

Therefore we will send out this monthly bulletin with all the details about what’s going on for the month ahead in the galleries and theatres plus all the fabulous activities organised by our community & education team. It will also be available to download from the press release section of our website www.thelowry.com/news along with a range of images for events, available from www.thelowryimages.com.

We will only continue to send out press releases about individual events where we have a specific newsworthy reason for doing so. For example if we have additional information such as new casting or the show is a première or we want to highlight specific media opportunities etc.

Do let us know whether this new system works for you as we welcome your feedback to help us provide the best service possible.

Wishing you a very Happy Christmas and New year.

Best Wishes

Michelle Bowey

This, along with Fallen’s poetic portrait of eternal love, Upswing and BRB’s brand new production of Cinderella are the first three shows of Dance Moves, The Lowry’s new annual dance season.

Fallen

Interviews with Fallen creator Vicki Amedume available on request

Alone in a foreign land, caught in a place of transition, a woman turns from reality to escape to a place where dreams reunite her with all she has lost in her flight.

Fallen is an epic, poetic and personal story inspired partly by the experiences of creator Vicki Amedume’s mother as an asylum seeker from Ghana in the UK and partly by her own experiences of trying to reconcile her West African upbringing with her European moral framework. This is the story of a woman refugee arriving in a foreign host country and her struggle to let go of her past and of the loss of her husband and son to be able to move forward and build herself a new life. Fallen references the cultural distance between her lost home and her new country whilst addressing universal questions surrounding self-image, belonging and effacement. The final work will sit somewhere between metaphor, fiction and representation.

Weaving dance, aerial, circus, shadows and animation with African spirituality and a modern story, ‘Fallen’ creates a dynamic and poetic portrait of eternal love, overwhelming loss and the resilience of the human spirit, whilst questioning what it means to be a woman and a mother when caught in the process of change as one culture meets another.

Following events at the National Theatre’s Watch this Space (Loved Up), The Liverpool Culture Company for European City of Culture, BBC London, Without Walls, and the Commonwealth Games Cultural Festival in Melbourne amongst others, Upswing has established itself at the forefront of aerial interdisciplinary circus in the UK.

Created by aerial director Vicki Amedume, animator Nic Rawlings from Paper Cinema, and mentor Mark Murphy (VTol).

“with terrific input from aerial experts, Upswing, this is one hell of a ride’ **** - Guardian (on New Vic’s Wicked Lady)

“Utterly spellbinding." ***** -  News of the World (on National Theatre of Scotland’s Peter Pan on which Upswing was Movement Director)

Michael Clark Company

come, been and gone

Interviews available with cast and creative team on request

Michael Clark Company’s critically acclaimed production come, been and gone is set primarily to the music of David Bowie. It also embraces the work of key collaborators, Lou Reed and Brian Eno, and touches on some of his influences, The Velvet Underground and Kraftwerk amongst others.

?’Rock is my rock. It has been vital to me at a personal level; it has shaped me as an
individual as well as an artist?’
Michael Clark.

Michael Clark chose to become a choreographer believing that actions speak louder than words. He creates work which combines his classical integrity with a more complex, contemporary sensibility embracing virtue and vice, abandon and control, grace and embarrassment. He is renowned for his legendary collaborations with bands, fashion designers and visual artists including Wire, BodyMap, Leigh Bowery, Trojan and Sarah Lucas.

Commissioned by barbicanbite09 and Dance Umbrella (London), La Biennale di Venezia (Venice) and Dansens Hus (Stockholm) as part of European Network of Performing Arts (ENPARTS).

Co-produced by barbicanbite09, Dance Umbrella, Michael Clark Company, Edinburgh International Festival, Grand Théâtre de Luxembourg and Maison des Arts de Créteil.

Michael Clark Company is supported by Arts Council England.

Sat 15 January – Sun 10 April

The Birth of British Rock: Photographs by Harry Hammond

Starting in the late 1940s, Harry Hammond captured the definitive images of virtually every leading British musician, as well as those of many visiting American artists. From Cliff Richard to The Beatles, Shirley Bassey to Dusty Springfield, Harry Hammond captured the emergence of the British rock ‘n’ rollers. First circulated through the New Music Express (NME), his work has set the standard of pop photography for the following generations.

This exhibition is a V&A Theatre Collections touring exhibition.

Closes Sun 6 March 2011

Invitation to the Ballet: Ninette de Valois and the story of The Royal Ballet

A collaboration between the Royal Opera House and The Lowry

A celebration of one of the world’s leading ballet companies, showcasing set designs, photographs, film and costumes worn by some of the most famous names in ballet including Margot Fonteyn, Darcey Bussell and Carlos Acosta, creating a truly 360-degree view of the glorious history of The Royal Ballet.

This landmark exhibition pays tribute to one of the towering figures of twentieth-century ballet, Ninette de Valois, and is the most comprehensive exhibition about The Royal Ballet ever staged.

Drawn almost exclusively from the Collections of the Royal Opera House, it tells De Valois’ remarkable story alongside the history of the Company she founded. As a young Irish dancer born Edris Stannus, she started her career impersonating Anna Pavlova in English seaside pier theatres and went on to found one of the world’s leading dance companies.

With rarely seen sketches from LS Lowry himself, inspired by De Valois’ Coppélia, this incredible exhibition is a genuine must-see.

Closes Sun 1 May
