DANCE

Tue 15 & Wed 16 March

Dance Consortium

Ailey 2

This is the first UK visit by Ailey 2 whose dancers are the most talented of their generation, captivating audiences and translating their strength, agility and grace of body and soul into stirring, powerful performances.

A true American hero, Alvin Ailey changed the face of modern dance in the 1960s, as pieces choreographed beautifully to jazz, blues and gospel gave dance an uplifting energy seldom felt before.

Under the artistic direction of former Ailey dancer Sylvia Waters, this critically-acclaimed company presents an exhilarating and diverse repertoire that includes Alvin Ailey’s timeless quintessential masterpiece Revelations, which is now on the English curriculum, plus thrilling new works by today’s most outstanding choreographers.

When questioned about the company’s first international touring year, Artistic Director

Sylvia Waters said, “This is a groundbreaking year for Ailey 2. The Company has earned

a place on the world stage, and we look forward to sharing our unique spirit, dance

artistry, and choreographic works with audiences from Belfast, UK to Columbus, Ohio!”

Shards

Donald Byrd's Shards is a skillfully crafted work, which showcases his eclectic and complex choreography. Set to music by Mio Morales, Byrd expertly combines passion and formality in this ballet, creating the perfect vehicle for the stunning Ailey II dancers.

Echoes

Thang Dao’s Echoes features all 12 dancers, began as a depiction of haunting memories. But this poignant ballet has since taken on a life of its own, as the echoes of memories cascade into the distant past while pervading our awareness of the present.

Revelations

"sometimes sorrowful, sometimes jubilant, but always hopeful." This enduring classic is a tribute to that heritage and to Ailey’s genius. Using African-American religious music--spirituals, song-sermons, gospel songs and holy blues--this suite fervently explores the places of deepest grief and holiest joy in the soul. "Is there a more moving work in 20th century dance than Revelations?"

The Lowry is delighted to present Ailey 2 through the generous support of Arts Council England Sustain fund.

Company Chameleon

Search & Find

Join us in and around the building as The Lowry’s resident company showcase their new work. Search & Find explores the idea of connection and disconnection between two people, as two protagonists search for a way to find a sense of shared understanding and purpose.

Chameleon will also be performing two solo pieces: Shattered is a discourse on the conception of ‘shattered’ in all its permutations; and Second Grace, inspired by a soldier’s experience of war, comments upon the world in which many of us live, where rules and regulations are forced upon us that our better instincts tell us are unjust.

Tue 22 March

Phoenix Dance Theatre

Reflected

Interviews with cast and creative team available on request

Internationally renowned contemporary dance company Phoenix Dance Theatre return to The Lowry for the first time under new Artistic Director Sharon Watson with Reflected.

As Phoenix celebrates its 30th birthday, Reflected offers the perfect opportunity to get reacquainted with this long treasured company. This programme of four contrasting and musically diverse dance works includes two pieces by Sharon Watson, one by Richard Wherlock, Philip Taylor and a rare revival of Lost Dog’s 2006 Phoenix sensation, Pave up Paradise.

Sharon Watson’s latest creation, the elegant and visually stunning Melt. Set to the music of Leeds-based Mercury Music Prize nominees Wild Beasts and performed by seven gliding and swooping dancers, the gravity-defying Melt features aerial dance which merges the stage and the space above.

Ballett Basel Artistic Director Richard Wherlock’s debut work for Phoenix Switch delivers six vibrantly clad dancers in perpetual motion, backed by a pulsating soundtrack from dance composer b.free. Philip Taylor’s mesmerising What It Is, a dramatic and emotional journey for a trio of dancers, takes its name from one of two early Amy Winehouse songs that score the choreography.

First performed by Phoenix in 2006 Lost Dog’s (Ben Duke and Raquel Meseguer) dynamic, sensual and confrontational duet Pave up Paradise revisits Adam and Eve after their fall from grace. Complemented by spoken word interludes and live acoustic arrangements of Jeff Buckley, Strokes and Gomez tracks the pair squabble over who was to blame for their loss of Paradise. Pave up Paradise is a witty and irreverent examination of guilt, innocence, and lust for forbidden fruit.

Melt. Choreography: Sharon Watson. Lighting Design: Michael Mannion. Music: Wild Beasts. Costume Design: Heidi De Raad.

Switch. Choreography & Design Concept: Richard Wherlock. Lighting Design: Michael Mannion. Music: b.free. Costume Design: Lorna Clayton.

What It Is. Choreography & Stage Design: Philip Taylor. Lighting: Michael Mannion. Music: Amy Winehouse. Costume Design: Ben Voorhaar.

DRAMA

Richard III

The Comedy of Errors

By William Shakespeare

Directed by Edward Hall

Following sell-out shows and rave reviews, the internationally acclaimed all-male company Propeller, led by Director Ed Hall, returns to The Lowry. Renowned for combining a rigorous approach to the text with an exciting, physical aesthetic to engage its audiences’ imaginations and bring fresh understanding to classic plays, this is Shakespeare rediscovered and reinvigorated.

The Comedy of Errors

Shakespeare’s most farcical comedy, and also his smartest. Two sets of estranged twins, separated at birth, find themselves in the same city 25 years later with hilarious consequences. A series of mistaken identities, assumed personas, and wild mishaps bring a family crisis - so complicated that time itself loses the plot - into heart warming focus. Fortunately the audience is always one step ahead…

Richard III

Arguably Shakespeare’s most villainous King, we watch in horror and delight, unable to resist Richard’s cruel wit and dark humour as he murders his way to the throne. This is a hugely entertaining and diabolical adventure that tells the story of one man’s journey to heaven, then back to hell.

Terminus

By Mark O’Rowe

With an outstanding international reputation, Ireland’s National Theatre presents an English premiere at The Lowry where they are performing for the very FIRST time.

Hold tight as the ordinary turns extraordinary in this exhilarating play by Mark O‘Rowe, writer of Howie the Rookie and the cult film Intermission. Catapult from the bustling streets to the skies above Dublin, then plummet deep to the bowels of the earth as three people are ripped from their daily lives and thrown into a fantastical world of singing serial killers, avenging angels and love-sick demons.

Terminus is a roaring hit wherever it plays. Don’t miss this breathtaking production. But be warned – it’s not for the faint of heart!

By Mark O’Rowe… we go, see the slo-mo ebb and flow; the mill, the babble, the rabble of wobbling waywards, exiled and aimless, unlike us as, purposeful and double-file, like kids on a dare, we head who the hell knows where? …

‘Hilarious, stunning, surprisingly touching and enormously satisfying…Terminus is a fantastic piece of writing, O’Rowe’s best so far.’ Irish Times on Terminus

Hull Truck Theatre

April in Paris

Written and directed by John Godber

Interviews with cast and creative team available on request

Much-loved theatre company Hull Truck, which celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2011, is coming to The Lowry as part of a national tour of the hit comedy. The play’s writer John Godber directs Wendi Peters and co-star Robert Angell, a Truck favourite.

Wendi, best known for her TV role as Cilla Battersby-Brown, will play Bet - a woman desperately seeking new experiences to liven up her dull existence. When she hears from Bella magazine that she has won a weekend break to Paris, she is thrilled – but unsurprisingly, her husband Al (Robert Angell) is less enthusiastic. The pair end up boarding the ferry together and find themselves in a host of hilarious situations. As well as learning about French culture and cuisine, they also discover a lot more about each other.

Wendi, who last worked with Hull Truck on John Godber’s Teechers 16 years ago, said: “I am thrilled to be working with Hull Truck and John Godber again. I have been touring for some time now and I love it – it’s great to work at different venues around the country and meet lots of people. Taking this role in April in Paris was an easy decision – I was keen to work with John again and this is a beautiful play.”

Hull Truck was started as a touring company in 1971, operating from the back of a truck. Now, 40 years on, the company has grown and opened a £15m base in Hull in 2009. It remains highly committed to touring, visiting more than 80 venues this spring with April in Paris, Lady Chatterley’s Lover, The Lady in the Van and Muscle.

Award winning actor Steven Pinder (Brookside, Doctors) takes to the stage as Reverend Shaw Moore. Starting in the late 1940s, Hammond (1920 – 2009) captured the definitive images of virtually every leading British musician, as well as those of many visiting American artists. From Tommy Steele to The Beatles, Shirley Bassey to Dusty Springfield, and from Cliff Richard to the Rolling Stones, he encapsulated the emergence of the British rock ‘n’ rollers. His shots of Gene Vincent, newly clad in black leather, were to be particularly influential on later stars, including David Bowie and Ian Dury, while his portrait of Buddy Holly on stage became the image for the long–running West End musical Buddy.

As lead photographer for the New Musical Express (NME) from its re-launch in 1952 until the early 1960s, Hammond took some of the most famous images of the era and set the standard of pop photography for future generations.  A well-mannered but self-assured craftsman, Hammond treated these musical upstarts with a professional respect matched by few of his contemporaries. As Andrew Loog Oldham, the former manager of the Rolling Stones, remembers: “He always stood out away from the other snappers who loathed us, wished us no good, and couldn’t wait to get back to snapping Vera Lynn.”

Kate Farrell, The Lowry’s Curator of Special Exhibitions commented: “We are delighted to continue our relationship with the V&A by displaying this definitive work by Britain’s leading showbiz photographer.  Without iconic shots by Harry Hammond, we may have had a few less pop culture icons. This exhibition is presented as part of our performance related visual art programme, which explores performance practice in its broadest sense. We are showing Harry Hammond alongside Invitation to the Ballet: Ninette De Valois and the story of the royal Ballet, which showcases set designs, photographs, film and costumes, creating a glorious history of The Royal Ballet.”

Invitation to the Ballet: Ninette de Valois and the story of The Royal Ballet

A collaboration between the Royal Opera House and The Lowry

Closes Sun 6 March 2011

A celebration of one of the world’s leading ballet companies, showcasing set designs, photographs, film and costumes worn by some of the most famous names in ballet including Margot Fonteyn, Darcey Bussell and Carlos Acosta, creating a truly 360-degree view of the glorious history of The Royal Ballet.

This landmark exhibition pays tribute to one of the towering figures of twentieth-century ballet, Ninette de Valois, and is the most comprehensive exhibition about The Royal Ballet ever staged.

Drawn almost exclusively from the Collections of the Royal Opera House, it tells De Valois’ remarkable story alongside the history of the Company she founded. As a young Irish dancer born Edris Stannus, she started her career impersonating Anna Pavlova in English seaside pier theatres and went on to found one of the world’s leading dance companies.

With rarely seen sketches from LS Lowry himself, inspired by De Valois’ Coppélia, this incredible exhibition is a genuine must-see.
