Press Pack - Event Diary for theatres & exhibitions in April in chronological order
There’s a definite spring in The Lowry’s step this April as our Dance Moves season goes from strength to strength.
Richard Alston Dance Company brings a triple bill of contemporary British dance pieces (Tue 12 April), Les Ballets Trocadero de Monte Carlo combine technical prowess with pure comedy for the most enjoyable night at the ballet around (Fri 15 & Sat 16 April) and Vincent Simone and Flavia Cacace bring the glamour of Strictly Come Dancing to our Lyric stage with Midnight Tango (Mon 18 & Wed 20 – Sat 23 April).
Strictly Come Dancing inspires another show in our Quays theatre, Shaun’s Big Show, a live version of the children’s TV favourite that sees Shaun and his farmyard friends learn to tango after watching an episode of the BBC1 show (Tue 19 – Sun 24 April). There’s plenty more for families in April as well, including stunning ice show Cirque de Glace (Wed 27 April – Sun 1 May), magical adventure Lost Sock Princess (Sun 24 April) and The Wizard Of Oz, starring Bobby Davro, Ben Hanson, Steph Fearon and Sarah-Jane Honeywell.
The Lowry is also delighted to announce a major new exhibition for our Promenade Gallery, Nadav Kander: Selected Portraits, 1999 – 2011 (Sat 16 April – Sun 4 September). Internationally renowned photographer Nadav Kander’s show for The Lowry features work that has never been exhibited before, including striking images of Eric Cantona, Cheryl Cole, Tinie Tempah and head shots of Take That for their latest album, Progress.

DANCE
Tue 12 April
Richard Alston Dance Company
Interviews with cast and creative team available on request
Music is at the heart of Richard Alston’s dance-making, and this programme features music full of glorious contrasts – from terse anger, to sweet lyricism, to pulsating rhythms.
Since Richard Alston Dance Company last appeared at The Lowry, they’ve had an eventful year. Highlights include two lengthy and well received tours of the US, Richard winning the National Dance Awards De Valois Award for Outstanding Achievement and being appointed chair of Youth Dance England.
This triple bill features a revival of Richard’s extraordinary Overdrive, his 2003 contemporary classic which is regarded by many dance fans as a new millennial spin on his iconic Roughcut. This is a rare chance to see one of the defining classics of the modern British dance canon, and one of its most exciting.
Overdrive is one of a series of pieces Richard has made responding to the energy of pure rhythm – such as Roughcut (1990), Strong Language (1987) and Rainbow Bandit (1977). The choreography rides along on a great tide of repeating rhythms. It demands great stamina and technical skills of the dancers, and RADC rises to the occasion memorably. “Utterly exhilarating” Sunday Times.
Out Of The Strong, Richard’s latest choreography, is performed to Prokofiev’s thrillingly virtuosic Sixth Piano Sonata, played live onstage by Jason Ridgway. Music and dance deal with the complexity of Prokofiev’s character, which was warm and irascible by turn.
In Lie Of The Land, the sharp sweetness of Ned Rorem’s writing for string quartet has taken choreographer Martin Lawrance into new territory. Lyrical yet urgent dancing charts the lie of the land in ever restless and searching mood changes.

Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo
Interviews with Artistic Director Tory Dobrin and dancers available on request
Following a sell-out performance in 2009, the all male legendary Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo return to The Lowry with a fantastic programme of Go for Barocco, Raymonda’s Wedding, a pas de deux (to be announced) and the company’s signature piece, Swan Lake Act II.
Affectionately known as The Trocks, the company’s 16 professional male dancers faithfully bring to life some of the greatest moments of classical ballet, displaying startling technique. Treading a fine line between high art and high camp, it is a fusion that celebrates both the beauty and the essential absurdity of classical ballet. The dancers perform en pointe in glittering tutus, combining a loving knowledge of dance with a wicked sense of fun.
The original concept of Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo has not changed. It is a company of professional male dancers performing the full range of the ballet and modern dance repertoire, including classical and original works, in faithful renditions of the manners and conceits of those dance styles. The comedy is achieved by incorporating and exaggerating the foibles, accidents, and underlying incongruities of serious dance. The fact that men dance all the parts – heavy bodies delicately balancing on toes as swans, sylphs, water sprites, romantic princesses, angst-ridden Victorian ladies – enhances rather than mocks the spirit of dance as an art form, delighting and amusing dance aficionados and novices alike. The Trocks’ original purpose was and continues to be to bring the pleasure of dance to the widest possible audience.
Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo’s UK tour is organised by Dance Consortium.
Its UK tours are supported by Arts Council England.

Midnight Tango
Full biographies for Vincent and Flavia available
Telephone interviews with Vincent and Flavia can be arranged on request
A Syndicated interview with Arlene Phillips is available “She talks tango, reveals her passions and explains why you’re more likely to find a lettuce than a lipstick in her handbag.”
Vincent Simone and Flavia Cacace have dazzled television audiences for six series of the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing with their stunning tango routines. Now they have created their own live show, Midnight Tango, a breathtaking evening bringing to life all the drama, sensuality and elegance of this most exciting of dance forms. Ticket sales have been so good that an extra date has been added to The Lowry’s visit, with performances now on Mon 18 April, Wed 20th through until Sat 23 April.
Midnight Tango is set in a late-night bar in downtown Buenos Aires. Vincent and Flavia will be joined by ten of the finest tango dancers in the world, and, between them, they will take the audience on a journey into the heart of this intoxicating city, as danger and excitement, joy and jealousy, pain and passion combine into a spectacular and explosive piece.
At the prospect of touring the country in Midnight Tango, Flavia says, “Vincent and I have been performing since a very young age, all over the world and in ballrooms all around the United Kingdom. We have had only a small taster of performing on a stage this year and it was a thrilling experience. The fact that we can finally tour with our own Argentine tango show is so exciting, it's difficult to put into words how we feel. We hope that, as always, we will have amazing support all round the British Isles and we hope to bring a little passion into people’s lives...”
The nationwide tour of Midnight Tango is produced by Arlene Phillips and Adam Spiegel. According to Arlene, "Watching Vincent and Flavia performing their Argentine tango, I feel, is as thrilling as dance gets. They have thrilled audiences on Strictly Come Dancing, and their new theatre show is a great opportunity for people up and down the country to see them live and feel the excitement."

Hull Truck Theatre
April in Paris
Written and directed by John Godber
Interviews with cast and creative team available on request
Much-loved theatre company Hull Truck, which celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2011, is coming to The Lowry as part of a national tour of the hit comedy. The play’s writer John Godber directs Wendi Peters and co-star Robert Angell, a Truck favourite.
Wendi, best known for her TV role as Cilla Battersby-Brown, will play Bet - a woman desperately seeking new experiences to liven up her dull existence. When she hears from Bella magazine that she has won a weekend break to Paris, she is thrilled – but unsurprisingly, her husband Al (Robert Angell) is less enthusiastic. The pair end up boarding the ferry together and find themselves in a host of hilarious situations. As well as learning about French culture and cuisine, they also discover a lot more about each other.
Wendi, who last worked with Hull Truck on John Godber’s Teechers 16 years ago, said: “I am thrilled to be working with Hull Truck and John Godber again. I have been touring for some time now and I love it – it’s great to work at different venues around the country and meet lots of people. Taking this role in April in Paris was an easy decision – I was keen to work with John again and this is a beautiful play.”
Hull Truck was started as a touring company in 1971, operating from the back of a truck. Now, 40 years on, the company has grown and opened a £15m base in Hull in 2009. It remains highly committed to touring, visiting more than 80 venues this spring with April in Paris, Lady Chatterley’s Lover, The Lady in the Van and Muscle.

Monkeywood in development with The Lowry
Once in a House on Fire
NeverBeenSeen
Interviews with cast and creative team available on request
Manchester based Monkeywood Theatre have been building a reputation for producing plays based on Mancunian stories and characters for the past 7 years and their latest work looks set to continue this ambition. Following the huge success of the 2010 tour of Maine Road, their new project which opens at The Lowry on Thu 31 March 2011 is a new play based on the characters, themes and places in the memoir, Once in a House on Fire by Andrea Ashworth.
Developed with The Lowry Studio, supported by Arts Council England and funded through grants for the arts, Once in a House on Fire, by Sarah McDonald Hughes, is a compelling story set across South Manchester during the 1970s and 80s. Focussing on a family of four women living in the shadow of domestic violence and poverty, it is a hopeful, truthful and moving story of sisters, survival, and growing up.
Andy and her sisters haven’t had it easy. They escape through stories, games and dreams of a ‘happy family’. With each new start ending faster than the last, their hopes of ever getting it right are stubbed out along with their mum’s cigarettes. As a life beyond Manchester’s grey sky beckons, Andy knows her escape will come at a cost.
Monkeywood’s Co-Artistic Director Francesca Waite met Mancunian author Andrea Ashworth in Los Angeles, where she is now based and Editor in Chief of online platform Womens Worldwide Web. Andrea and her family have supported the project from its inception, with Andrea’s sister and niece even attending one of the initial rehearsals. Andrea said, "I'm thrilled that Once in a House on Fire is being brought to life on the stage through the fabulous Monkeywood Theatre, and immensely proud that they're devoting their unique talents and passion to sharing this story. I can't wait to see what they do..."
The Once in a House on Fire project began in August 2010 when Monkeywood and associate writer Sarah worked collaboratively with actors, a director, a video artist and young people from a local school and sixth form college to produce a first draft of the play. Growing up in Moss Side, Andrea attended Chorlton High School (formerly Oakwood High) and Xaverian Sixth Form College in Rusholme, which Monkeywood’s Sarah and Francesca also attended. Monkeywood ran workshops with both groups of young people and will present the final production to them in April. Of the young people’s involvement, Francesca Waite said, “It was great to be able to work with the sixth formers to get their ideas on a story set in their neighbourhood, involving characters of a similar age to them. Although it was strange to return to our college, it was lovely to realise how far we’ve come since those days and share our experiences of making theatre with the drama students.”
Once in a House on Fire will tour nationally throughout 2011 and will appear in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The production will help to support Women's Worldwide Web, an online platform that empowers women, their families and communities, through microfinance, education, mentoring and social networking. Folie à Deux
NeverBeenSeen
Fusing groundbreaking technology and expressive physicality to create a heartbreaking exploration of memory, imagination and what it means to be human, Folie à Deux, GreenEyedZero’s brand new piece, premieres at The Lowry on Thu 28th April.
Created in development with The Lowry, Folie à Deux takes the audience on a journey through the minds of two very unique individuals; one who believes he is dead, the other who has forgotten her past. The story takes place in a retreat for the mentally unwell where we meet the two characters sharing a room and their memories.
With a huge scaffold structure as their stage, these unforgettable characters whisk the audience away into the theatre of their minds where imagination is unleashed. Falling from extreme heights, entombed under rubble, the impossible journey of a ball, all become reality in this mesmerising horizon of the imagination.
Directed by the award-winning internationally renowned Bim Mason this story universally resonates with the search for who we are and where our place in the world is. Folie à Deux is an intimate tale of both human experience and loss and the delicate kindness that can appear in the cracks of distress.

Shaun the Sheep in Shaun’s Big Show
Interviews with cast and creative team available on request
The 2010 EMMY and BAFTA award-winning BBC family favourite, Shaun the Sheep, makes its stage debut in a brand-new live production, Shaun’s Big Show, adapted by the National Children’s Dramatist David Wood.
Shaun is stage-struck and has decided to put on a very special show for all his friends; there’ll be some madcap mayhem ahead as they dance and prance their way through a series of adventures under the nose of the short-sighted Farmer.
Aardman's television series, Shaun the Sheep first appeared on BBC1 and CBBC in March 2007. Inspired by Nick Park's 1995 Academy Award-winning short film, A Close Shave, the series has been sold worldwide.
This new show will be presented on tour by Calibre Productions, who boast a successful repertoire of acclaimed stage adaptations including House of Ghosts: An Inspector Morse Murder Mystery, Porridge, Dad’s Army and ‘Allo ‘Allo!
Producer Ed O’Driscoll comments: “Adapting a televised series for stage is a complex task and none perhaps more so than with Shaun the Sheep, where we are not merely adapting a sitcom but a silent animation. We have brought on-board a great team of talented individuals; dramatist David Wood, designer Susie Caulcutt and choreographer Bill Deamer, to bring the animation to life with a wonderful show which we hope will be enjoyed by all”.
All the favourite characters from the hit series will feature in this wholly live show, including Bitzer, Shirley, Timmy and the rest of the flock in a fully choreographed music and dance extravaganza.
Shaun’s Big Show has been adapted especially for stage by David Wood, whose acclaimed catalogue of children’s stage adaptations include, among others, Babe The Sheep-Pig, The BFG, The Witches, The Twits, James And The Giant Peach, Fantastic Mr Fox and Tom's Midnight Garden. This particular production marks David’s first screened animation adaptation, adopting the premise of the televised series - being performed entirely without spoken narrative.
The main storyline features the Flock accidentally discovering the joys of dance, and Shaun being inspired to put on his own show in the barn. The inspiration is provided by none other than the Farmer, who has been watching episodes of Strictly Come Dancing and decides to teach himself how to tango.
Aardman Ltd is a pioneer in the field of model stop-motion animation and possibly best-known for its feature-film creations Chicken Run, The Curse of the Were-Rabbit and Flushed Away, and has a stable of characters that include Morph, Wallace & Gromit, Creature Comforts, Timmy, Angry Kid, Rex the Runt and many more.

Nadav Kander: Selected Portraits, 1999 – 2011
Sat 16 April – Sun 4 September 2011
The Lowry has curated a new exhibition from award winning, internationally renowned photographer Nadav Kander, featuring work that has never been exhibited before, including striking images of Eric Cantona and Cheryl Cole. Other works exhibited for the first time include photographs that were part of a sensational shoot with Tinie Tempah for The Observer magazine this February, and head shots of Take That for their latest album, Progress.
London based Kander is celebrated for his portraiture and landscape works, many of which exist within National collections such as the National Portrait Gallery and The V&A Museum.
His images are readily seen within high end editorial press as well as in contemporary art galleries and museums across the world, capturing subjects as diverse as Barack Obama's administration, and life alongside the epic Yangtze River in China.
Also featured are internationally acclaimed actors such as Sir Ian McKellen and Christopher Lee, as well as David Lynch and Spike Jonze, who make performances come to life behind the camera. The photographic portraits included in this show are a selection from Nadav Kander’s extensive collection dating from 1999 to present day. It includes singers Lily Allen, Michael Stipe, Nick Cave, Richard Ashcroft and Boy George. Nadav comments, “My main intention when photographing celebrities is making work that is unique and personal to that human being, even when the person in front of you has a fixed idea of how he or she wants to be portrayed.”
Kander manages to capture a well known face in a new, and often vulnerable light, using the lens to peer into the soul of the subjects he photographs, as well as his own. The remarkable effect of this process is displayed within this unmissable exhibition.
He comments, “My portraits are about how I respond to an individual and how I express my perception of a person through my portraiture, how we interact and how they present themselves to me will always have an influence on the final photograph; the shot becomes a photographic dialogue between the sitter and myself. Which ultimately extends to the viewer.”
Kate Farrell, The Lowry’s Curator of Special Exhibitions, comments: “We are really excited to work with Nadav Kander on this newly curated exhibition. We have carefully selected photographs from his vast archive of intriguing portraits of actors, directors and musicians; subjects that we are all familiar with, shot in a truly unique, and subtly beautiful way.”
The Birth of British Rock: Photographs by Harry Hammond
A V&A Theatre Collections touring exhibition
Closes Sun 10 April
Starting in the late 1940s, Hammond (1920 – 2009) captured the definitive images of virtually every leading British musician, as well as those of many visiting American artists. From Tommy Steele to The Beatles, Shirley Bassey to Dusty Springfield, and from Cliff Richard to the Rolling Stones, he encapsulated the emergence of the British rock ‘n’ rollers. His shots of Gene Vincent, newly clad in black leather, were to be particularly influential on later stars, including David Bowie and Ian Dury, while his portrait of Buddy Holly on stage became the image for the long–running West End musical Buddy.
As lead photographer for the New Musical Express (NME) from its re-launch in 1952 until the early 1960s, Hammond took some of the most famous images of the era and set the standard of pop photography for future generations. A well-mannered but self-assured craftsman, Hammond treated these musical upstarts with a professional respect matched by few of his contemporaries. As Andrew Loog Oldham, the former manager of the Rolling Stones, remembers: “He always stood out away from the other snappers who loathed us, wished us no good, and couldn’t wait to get back to snapping Vera Lynn.”
Kate Farrell, The Lowry’s Curator of Special Exhibitions commented: “We are delighted to continue our relationship with the V&A by displaying this definitive work by Britain’s leading showbiz photographer. Without iconic shots by Harry Hammond, we may have had a few less pop culture icons. This exhibition is presented as part of our performance related visual art programme, which explores performance practice in its broadest sense.”
