Terminus

By Mark O’Rowe

 Thu 24 – Sat 26 March

Press night, Thurs 24 March, 8pm

With an outstanding international reputation, Ireland’s National Theatre presents an English premiére at The Lowry where they perform for the very FIRST time.

The ordinary turns extraordinary in this exhilarating play by Mark O‘Rowe, writer of Howie the Rookie and the cult film Intermission. Audiences catapult from the bustling streets to the skies above Dublin, then plummet deep to the bowels of the earth as three people are ripped from their daily lives and thrown into a fantastical world of singing serial killers, avenging angels and love-sick demons.

… we go, see the slo-mo ebb and flow; the mill, the babble, the rabble of wobbling waywards, exiled and aimless, unlike us as, purposeful and double-file, like kids on a dare, we head who the hell knows where? …

Terminus is a roaring hit wherever it plays. Currently Terminus is showing in the States, from Boston and Philadelphia to Chicago and Maryland before making its English debut at The Lowry. This visit will be followed by performances in London, Cambridge, Glasgow and Sydney, Australia.

The Abbey Theatre is Ireland’s National Theatre and occupies a unique place in the hearts and minds of Irish people at home and abroad.  The Abbey has played a vital and often controversial role in the literary, social and cultural life of Ireland.  In its long history it has nurtured and premiered the work of major playwrights such as John Millington Synge, Sean O’Casey, Brian Friel, Tom Murphy, Frank McGuinness, Hugh Leonard and Marina Carr as well as actors Donal McCann, Siobhan McKenna, Stephen Rea, Liam Neeson, Sinead Cusack, Gabriel Byrne and Colm Meaney.

The Irish Times described Terminus as ‘hilarious, stunning, surprisingly touching and enormously satisfying… a fantastic piece of writing, O’Rowe’s best so far…’ ‘O’Rowe is pretty much the most exciting contemporary Irish playwright’ said the Sunday Tribune who describes Terminus as ‘gripping, grotesque and deliriously good… The Sunday Business Post said that Terminus further cements O’Rowe as a writer of exceptional talent and originality.’

Terminus is supported by the Arts Council and Culture Ireland.

The Abbey Theatre is Ireland’s National Theatre and occupies a unique place in the hearts and minds of Irish people at home and abroad.

It opened its doors on Abbey Street in Dublin’s city centre on 27 December 1904, with W.B. Yeats and Lady Augusta Gregory as its inaugural directors. In 1925 it was given an annual subsidy by the newly formed Irish Free State, becoming the first ever state-subsidised theatre in the English-speaking world.

With its two stages - Abbey and Peacock - the Abbey Theatre continues to be committed to creating a vibrant future for Irish theatre.  Its artistic policy centres on the promotion and development of new Irish writing and the revitalisation and presentation of plays from the Irish repertoire as well as classics of the European and world stages.  With an outstanding international reputation, the Abbey is committed to touring at home and abroad. www.abbeytheatre.ie.
