Audio description is a live verbal commentary on the visual elements of a production, designed to improve the enjoyment of visually impaired theatre goers. The description is broadcast as a performance unfolds through a discreet headset.
The Lowry often works with the company Vocaleyes to audio describe performances. Watch a short film about Vocaleyes below.
The Lowry uses a number of different organisations to provide our audio description service. If the organisation, Vocaleyes are being used, every visually impaired person who has pre-booked will receive a tape with detailed information on elements of the production, such as sets and costumes one week before the audio described performance. To find out which organisation is audio describing the show that you would like to attend, please check on the page relating to the show.
Audio Described performances are usually accompanied by a touch tour which normally takes place one hour before the performance. A touch tour is hosted by a member of the company and the audio describer, who will take you onto the stage and talk about the visual elements of a production and allow you to handle props and costumes and tell you more about the show.
