Manchester resident Sophie Giddens wins RSC photography competition to capture Hamlet rehearsal images

Rehearsal images for the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) Hamlet have been captured by Manchester resident Sophie Giddens after she won the RSC Key* Photography Competition.
In a commitment to support the next generation of theatre photographers, the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) launched the RSC Key* Photography Competition, for 16 – 25 year olds. The winners of which have been commissioned to take the rehearsal photos for the RSC’s four Shakespeare productions in the Spring 2018 season including the touring production of Hamlet directed by Simon Godwin
The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) will open the tour of its acclaimed production of Hamlet, originally seen in Stratford-upon-Avon in 2016, in Salford on Fri 26 January where it will run until Sat 3 February.
Sophie Giddens was commissioned as the professional rehearsal photographer for this production, contracted and paid for by the RSC. She was guided and mentored by one of the photography judges. Her photographs can be viewed here and will be used within the programme for each production.
Sophie moved to Manchester in 2012 after gaining a place at Manchester School of Theatre and permanently relocated in the city after graduation.
Young people entered the competition by posting the photo they wished to be judged on Instagram, tagging @TheRSCKey in the photo and using the hashtag #RSCPhotoComp. Entries were then shortlisted and the four winners were be selected by six judges.
The judges included three of the country’s leading theatre photographers: Manuel Harlan, Helen Maybanks and Topher McGrillis. They are joined by the RSC’s Deputy Artistic Director Erica Whyman, RSC Director of Communications Liz Thompson and RSC Image Manager Michelle Morton.
