A fresh perspective on Greek mythology from storytelling legends Wright&Grainger is set to take you to the moon and back.
Since 2019, childhood friends and multi award-winning theatremakers Alexander Wright and Phil Grainger have continued to make the odyssey from rural Yorkshire to Australia’s festival circuit. Their reimaginings of Greek myths have captivated crowds in venues large, small, and unusual: Soaring storytelling ORPHEUS (2019), electric gig-theatre THE GODS THE GODS THE GODS (2023), and breathlessly beautiful HELIOS (2024) - a story of gods and growing up looking at the sun, set along the country lanes of rural England. Now the company’s new show SELENE launches with a world premiere in Australia and New Zealand before anywhere else. Starring Megan Drury (THE GODS THE GODS THE GODS - Wright&Grainger, The Mirror - Gravity & Other Myths), SELENE is a sibling show to HELIOS; set to capture similar coming-of-age nostalgia and sparkling storytelling beats in a new tale about the child of the Goddess of the Moon Selene.
SELENE comes to Lowry, Salford from 25th to 26th Sep 2026. Book now at thelowry.com
“SELENE is joyous, funny, heartfelt and life-affirming… revel in its darkness and its light” 5 STARS - FRINGEFEED
A young girl is watching the moon landings on repeat, entranced by those astronauts’ weightlessness.
A bunch of teenagers are swimming under a lunar eclipse, lost in what might happen next.
A mis-matched couple are watching a horror film at a drive in cinema, about to step into all the next stuff.
SELENE is a story about the dark side of the moon. A radical explosion of an ancient myth.
Told through the eyes of Selene’s child Pandia and propelled by an original cinematic score reminiscent of Fleetwood Mac, this is a human story about the power of the universe and where we fit within it. It’s about our lightness and our darkness, our understanding of reality and ourselves, and the ambiguity we must embrace to grow. The story soars with awe and intrigue around the moon, yet remains grounded in our own bodies and ever-changing realities. Audiences gather around solo performer Megan Drury for 70 spellbinding minutes, punctuated by a unique and personal warmth.
“Wright & Grainger once again demonstrate their remarkable ability to transform myth into something achingly real” 5 STARS - THE BAREFOOT REVIEW
Performer Megan Drury says, "I’m really looking forward to sharing SELENE, and to connecting with people across the tour. The collective nature of storytelling in the show lends itself to that. There is a lot within SELENE that reflects and touches me personally. Likewise, I think it will touch and speak to audiences - across the board - in both gentle and profound ways.”
“We finish with full hearts, like half-drunk teens leaping into the moonlit lake together, the world open and full of possibility, and tears in everyone’s eyes.” FLAT CITY FIELD NOTES
