Edinburgh Smash Hit 'Madonna On The Rocks' Comes to Lowry this Autumn

Groundbreaking theatre maker Marie Hamilton brings her 2025 Edinburgh Fringe smash hit Madonna On The Rocks, to  Salford's Lowry from Wednesday 30th September - Thursday 1st October.

Inspired by her own experiences of postnatal depression, and of having a mother with depression, Hamilton dives fearlessly and hilariously into the chaos, beauty and brutality of motherhood in the 21st Century. Madonna On The Rocks is a wild, neon-lit musical about having a mother, about becoming one, and the hilarity and insanity of trying to make art when the world is on fire.

With a soundtrack written in Berlin by Hamilton, Ben Osborn and Madeline Shann blending pop bangers and punk electronica and drawing inspiration from musical icons including Madonna, Peaches and Nina Simone. Madonna On The Rocks is a joyous, fearless rallying cry and a celebration of those determined to give themselves wholly to their children while still having something left of themselves.

This unmissable exploration of modern motherhood is bolstered by an award-winning creative team. Madonna On The Rocks includes music from Cameron Mackintosh and Peter Brook Empty Space award-winning composer Ben Osborn (Three Lunar Seas, Opéra Grand Avignon; Ulster American, Schaubühne), directed by Georgia Murphy (Gary Starr Classic Penguins) and developed with Hildegard Ryan (Mustard and Chicken, Fringe First winning), Stephanie Kempson (Breathless, Fringe First winning) and Bryony Kimmings.

A show that pulls out all of these complicated, sometimes scary, sometimes rageful feelings and makes them funny. Because the best way through anything is by having a good laugh, a good snotty sob in the shoulder of the person next to you, and to leave the theatre feeling a little less alone.”
